RE: 05 forester drive tran binding
There's a series of things that "COULD" be your problem but most trany issues are best left to those who fully understand them. I have a fair grasp on auto trany and transfer case issues but not all that familiar with Subaru so I did a bit of research for you. Seems there's a clutch pack, a solenoid, and a control module that work in harmony with rear wheel application. When one (or more) of these items fail it causes what you describe. The trany filter is also a specialty item and many people are claiming the aftermarket units don't do the job or cause issues. IOW, the experts are saying to only buy OEM filters here. That said, my research also turned up that Subaru has an extended warranty for driveline. You should check your owners manual to see if things are covered before spending another penny!

Not 100% sure since I don't do that much with Sabaru but reading on the web tells me you can use a GM product for limited slip difs in that center case to help with binding issues. OTOH, I would check the warrany first.
