you only check the transmission in park and on level ground. it is way to dangerous to check the levels in drive or neutral

I don't have the specific information for a Volvo but I would recommend checking the owner's manual. There are several vehicles that do require you to check the fluid level in Neutral. I will agree with Sandman that this is dangerous if you don't take precautions such as setting the parking brake and blocking the wheels, but it is the required way. The owner's manual will give the exact procedure for your particular vehicle.
