1996 Accord
Its a 5-speed EX 2dr, The speedometer isnt working right, sometimes it works womitimes it doesnt. When its not working the needle goes to the 20mph and stays there, when it does work it is normal. The needle drops from 20mph to zero when the car is off. What could this be?

RE: 1996 Accord
It is most likely the speed sensor. It is bolted to the transmission near were the c.v. axle slides in. Here is a picture below. Let us know how it goes.

RE: 1996 Accord
It wasn't the speed sensor, I bought a new one installed it, exact same problem is happening. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

RE: 1996 Accord
Here is something I found on a professional tech website. Looks like a possable speedo head in the instrument cluster.

This Honda speedometer jumps to 20 mph when the key is turned
on and stays there until you accel to 40 mph. At that time it
will register the correct speed. Once it does register
correctly it continues to work properly until the next key
cycle. I have checked power, ground, and proper VSS to the
cluster, all are OK. It looks to me like it must be an
internal cluster problem. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks to all who responded. Most of you said that I likely
had a bad speedo head and you were right. I found a used
instrument cluster and installed it and the problem is solved.
Thanks again to all who responded. Hopefully I can help one of
you next time.
