alternator not charging batt.no lights or power to res of car help
heres the story i have an 81 olds cutlass i recently pulled the 231 6cyl and took and engine from a 95 chevy van g-20 series its the chevy 305.i converted the motor from TBI to carb left the belt system serpentine instead of v-belts this thing hasa new starter and new alternator as well a few days ago i had everything working but everything was dim, :brake lights.turnsignals headlights etc.: now i dont have any power to the dash only thing that works is the head lights (dim) and the engine.bought a conversion kit to patch the single wire going to alternator to the car. basically replacing the square clip the car had factory u kno the one that plugged into alternator{black wire going from dash then the red wire going to back of alt.the alternator is for a 95 set up instead of an 81 hence the conversion kit. motor start on the dime but is running off battery and help as to what the hell the problem is with this? i checked all wires/ fuses/and im going grey trying to fig this out!!! any help wud be appreciated thank you Smile

RE: alternator not charging batt.no lights or power to res of car help
Am familiar with both of those vehicles and my first impression is you have a bad ground or that "kit" you have is not right for that alternator. The alternator itself shouldl be self energizing (if it was working before) and that kit is just to make the dash light work properly.

During any engine swap the obvious things to miss as those pesky ground straps on the back of the heads and the ground that goes from battey negative to the radiator support or inner fender. The other thing to miss is where the interior gets it's power from. It's been 15 years since I sold my 81 olds but recalling a second wire from the back of the alternator going to the firewall.

Let us know if this helps.

RE: alternator not charging batt.no lights or power to res of car help
Extra ground straps never hurt and especially on a 30 year old vehicle, although some detective work with a volt meter could prove the point and save you time if you know how to do voltage drop tests.

The main issue with any electrical system is to have all parts of the system flowing the juice and not just the hot wires, which means the alternator must have a good ground to the block and the block must be well grounded to the battery, along with the battery being well grounded to the body for those parts (lights, blower, dash, etc) to work as they should. All too many overlook the ground side even when they know there's a problem someplace. Once that part is "solid" then go back and rethink the hot side if there are still issues.

Do you have the second wire on down at the starter (or is that from bat pos?) feeding everything?

If you know how to do a voltage drop test I would go there next. Start with the battery reading (12.6 volts?) at the posts (side terminals?) and go one connection at a time with the meter till you find the drop. Do the postitve side and then do the negative side separate.

Trying to paint a bed room today so wil check back between coats.
