cooling system
my mechanic told me he put some material in the engine to mend a problem in the cooling system (the thermostat) what is it please?

If the thermostat needs to be mended, all you can do is replace it. If there was a small leak, he put some cooling system sealer in the vehicle. I have never seen these products work if you are going to keep the vehicle. If there is a leak in the system, it needs repaired to keep from having further problems.

I understood this question differently. I thought that he was asking what the "Thermostat" was. My best answer to that would be: It's a small valve, controlled by heat, that opens and closes to keep the coolant at a set temperature range. Once the engine reaches a set temperature; usually between 175 & 195, the thermostat opens allowing "hot" coolant to travel to the radiator and "cooled" coolant to go to the engine. When the engine reaches the lower temperature limit the thermostat closes & the cycle repeats.
