1992 Subaru 1800 carburetor.
why is it popping in the exhaust between gear changes and is using lots of fuel.
the auto choke works ok and turns off.

An exhaust leak will do that and so will a carb throttle plate that closes too quickly.

I forget if that car uses a dash pot or a vac controlled "decel valve" but the idea is the last of the carb engines had some sort of gadget to slow throttle return to idle, which prevents overly rich conditions during high manifold vacuum, which causes excess fuel in the exhaust. It may be as simple as replacing vac hoses, which may be rotten with age.
