Steering Issues With Kia Sportage
I own a 2001 Kia Sportage EX 4WD and yesterday I began having issues with the steering. If I'm parked or idling and begin to make a turn(either left or right),the steering wheel begins to shake and it is difficult to turn. I checked my power steering fluid and it is capped off. Could this possibly be the power steering pump or CV joint? There is a pecking noise that is coming from the side of the engine where the power steering pump is located. At a loss on this since I'm not familiar with steering/suspension systems. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Good chance it's a slipping belt but there are other possibilities. If the fluid is dark or burnt smelling there could be deeper problems with the system. A bad CV joint would make noise while driving or turning at speed so that's probably ok. Not sure what you mean by "fluid and it is capped off". Perhaps you mean "topped off" as in full?

RE: Steering Issues With Kia Sportage
I'm going to check the belt out in the morning. I did have a look at the fluid.I'm not sure if power steering fluid has a certain "color",but this is nice and pink and smells just like ATF. Apparently, when I had my car worked on a few months back, the mechanic used transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid. I've read that the Sportage takes a certain type of power steering fluid and that if ATF is used instead,it could "foam up inside the pump and cause air to get into the system." I'll try draining it out and replacing it with the right fluid. Not sure if this could be the cause, but I'll give it a try first before bringing it in to be checked out. Thanks for the reply and info.

Yes, PS fluid is almost clear and ATF (a common substitute) is pink. Some foriegn cars call for special PS fluid so check the owner's manual. I doubt if this different fluid foaming up is the problem as it can only foam if air gets into the system, which usually means a leak or something is worn.
