idle issues and dead gauges
I have a 2003 civic 1.7L. The alternator came lose and fell off the car. it broke the tension bolt and was just setting in the area were it sits. Had it tested and it passed so I put it back on. Now when I start the car it idles up and down from 1000 to 500 rpms for about a minute or 2. Then all the gauges die and it idles correctly. But when I put it in gear it hits very hard. I'm out of ideas and hope that someone can help.

RE: idle issues and dead gauges
Most likely you are overlooking something obvious that happened when the alternator broke lose or during reinstallation.

What I would do is look for blown fuses, broken or disconnected vacuum lines, and poor grounds. After all it's an "old car" at this point so anything that got disturbed is suspect.

Once you have gone that route, if it's not fixed do a scan of the ECM for codes, which you can post here for further discussion, and have them cleared. Any new codes that come back in a day or so can also be scanned again and will be NEW so may lead us in the right direction.

RE: idle issues and dead gauges
I would pull the codes to know the possible issues.
